Snow Day?

Didn't I say we love snow?
Last evening after the Foothills drum circle, it started to come down.

Real heavy wet snow at first

and today nice powdery snow; maybe a foot or so. The foothills look great!

Yet another hall of fame:

Of course we are thinking SNOW as all us Coloradoans do this time of year!
Ski history from the late 1800's
At the Colorado Ski & Snowboard Museum and Hall of Fame in Vail. We can see from our kitchen window all that wonderful fluffy snow in the high country! We want it! We need it!

The Early Boards on display
The one at the top is from 1963. It looks similar to something I made when I was in high school! Man, I wish I know something about marketing back then! (Of course, I don't know much about it now either)

Snow Day?

Our first Colorado snow sculpture!
Here's Jeanne doing some initial carving.
On Friday, I piled up some snow in the back yard. What could we make? Could it be a statue of a corgi? The snow was light and it didn't pack very well. I made a 4 by 6 foot block about 5 feet tall. Due to the warm weather, the corgi idea wasn't going to fly. Maybe we would make a turtle...

but the idea regressed to a non-vertebrate !

By Saturday, the snow was melting quickly so we had to work fast getting the shell together.

While placing the antennae, the head fell off!
We quickly slapped together a new head, got the antennae back in place and took a last shot of our creation.

Sure, it's smiling now, but it will be gone by tomorrow!
Some snow that was. Maybe 6 inches total in Fort Collins. All the streets were dry by the end of the following day due to the warm sun that seems to shine every day around here. What fun is that?

We have some snow today!!! Everything's closed!

The ducks at Chick-Fest!
Looks like it's gonna snow all day! Finally some moisture! Will we build a snow sculpture? No man knows!

More Outsider Art

We like outsider art. Of course the prime example is the Swetsville Zoo. Here's another find:
This acid trip can be found on a wall inside a store in Fort Collins.

There is a theme to the art here.

With a parody of Da Vinci

or Grant Wood

They are all part of a collection that adorns the walls of Walrus Ice Cream in Fort Collins. There's a store in Greely too, but I don't know if there is any art on the walls.

Remember the snow sculptures in Breckenridge ? I found some pictures of the snow event in Chicago last weekend:

The one in the upper left is called 'Obaminable Snowman'. It was made by a group of high school students from Arlington Heights, Il.

The art of snow

In Breckenridge at the 19th International Snow Sculpture Championships!
Here's a Bulgarian team member chipping away.

Team Spain's entry (An angry owl pissed off because beavers are gnawing his tree)

Team Canada - the dance of the ancestors

In our opinion, Canada was the best entry.
In all there were 16 entries at Breckenridge, but we were not sure it was worth the 3 hour drive just to see the sculptures. Hey, that reminds me...

Back in Chicago, we made this dragon out of snow

... and one year we made this panda bear.
We could do the same in Fort Collins if it would snow. Maybe there's hope. One year FoCo had 3 feet of snow. It could happen!

Note also: Our old neighbor from Arlington Heights, Fran Volz is hosting a snow sculpture contest in Grant Park, Chicago.  Check it out this February 12 -15, 2009!

Snow Traffic

video
A snowman directing traffic
There's still some snow on some streets. The sun is out today, so most of it will be melted by the end of the day.  The forecast says 60 degrees on Sunday, then 32 and snow by Tuesday.

Our first snow!!!

We love snow! And so, yesterday's high being 69 degrees, it just didn't look or feel right.
We had 5 inches last night with a possible 3 more later today.
Here's my chance to document the winter weather conditions in FoCo!
As far as we can tell:
1) We didn't see any plows out on College or Harmony until noon.
2) Our street probably won't get plowed; The snow WILL melt by Friday.
3) We thought the HOA would shovel the walks; maybe not!
4) I have a snowblower and I know how to use it!
