Wood Chips

Lathe Project

Used to be a candle holder piece of worm-eaten log good enough to practice some wood turning.

Digging in

This might turn out to be a little wooden cup. I was trying to get in deep with just a spindle gouge and a scraper.

Outside shape cut

The trick was to get a wall thickness of about 2mm. I felt along the inside of the cup to get an idea of just how far I might be able to cut without going through the wall.

Separation time

The shape is complete and maybe a little sanding before the base is released from the the “holy log”

Finished Product?

Oh, sure there are the worm holes in the thing, but it has character! As someone once said: “Seen from up close, many aspects of nature, humans and evolution are in fact chaotic, superfluous and often “adjusted” by strokes of luck. But this, paradoxically, is great news. We tend to think that the imperfections that fill the biological world are only a side effect, a cost to be borne in order to achieve a higher goal. On the other hand, they have a positive value and contain masses of creativity, which is the driver of evolution itself.”

Sunday Jam!

Social Distancing Jam

Here we got Pat, Jim, William and Richard. They’ve been meeting every Sunday on the back deck for the last month and we hope to continue through the summer. As you can see, we are placed 6 feet apart at all times.

Still there

Steel Dino

A short roadtrip out to Swetsville to see what’s up. Yes, it’s still open during the pandemic.

Even after a flood each year, still there.

The new bike path is completed going into Timnath and past the ‘zoo’ and you could actually sneak in under the Harmony bride as long as the river is not too high.

Oct 13, 1992 Cashel and Killarny

In Tipperary
A long long way to “The Rock” of Cashel and lots of the Irish High Cross pictures. “The Rock of Cashel is an ancient royal site of the kings of Munster and first attained importance as a fortress. Its origins as a centre of power go back to the 4th or 5th centuries”
Ross Castle
We were here in 2017 and took a boat out to Innisfallin. Look here for that post.
Scanllion’s Place
The Scanllion’s B&B was our post while in the town on Dingle and as it was near the inlet of the Dingle Harbor, they (The Scanllions) were excited because you could see a dolphin swimming in the inlet. I don’t thing the town had a name for it, but eventually they settled on the name of “Fungi”. (It’s the nickname of a local fisherman, they say)
OK; 3433/173741 = 1.98 ! The index is rising! This is NOT good.
The Reach
These pics are out of sequence; This is Tides Reach in the Mumbles. The headland is thought by some to have been named by French sailors, after the shape of the two anthropomorphic islands which comprise the headland: the word “Mumbles” may be a corruption of the French les mamelles, meaning “the breasts.”
Dingle Banjo
When we were in Dingle we stopped in at O’Flaherty’s Pub. It’s the place I played banjo with two young uilleann pipers.
On Worm’s Head
OK, this was Alison’s idea to go to the Gower Peninsula in Wales, UK (also known as the Mumbles). She read a novel by Susan Howatch called “Wheel of Fortune” where the main character goes out to the “Worm’s Head”. SO we trecked out to the ‘Head and made it back alive.

March Projects

Hurdy Gurdy construction
Maybe a Greek Bouzouki
Bouzouki side view
Bouzouki Inside view
And ribs of possible Gurdy

The latest music projects this month involve using the curved wood resonators that I made a while ago. The Bouzouki is sounding good but the Gurdy is going to go through some design changes as I am building the thing on a ‘hunch’ as tRump would say. Good luck with that!

Pinball!

Pinball art by Paul Faris
Faris is an illustrator with over forty years of experience working with arcade pinball and video games.

A selection of his popular pinball games—including Evel Knievel, Lost World, Frankenstein, Centaur, and Phantom of the Opera were on display at our local events center.

Paul worked in the Chicago area where the big name pinball companies were located. He has now moved to Fort Collins! Good move.

Kendang building time!

Famous Gamelan Crew at the Denver Library

Sometimes I am recruited to hit the kendang for this non-profit organization that promotes Indonesian arts and culture.

We On the BIG SCREEN!

Sunday, August 18th, 2019

What started out as a fund raiser for the FoCo Cafe turned into a local film fest and our crazy movies we made over the past few years were featured. At this event, the local drive-in theater “Holiday Twin” had asked local film makers for short movies to show on the big screen. Our two films were shown and we really think our efforts were the best of the show because: 1) They were funny 2)They were not boring, and 3) They were cheaply made with style!

End of RAGBRAI

Dead Raccoon

So, if you are reading this blog, the posting order is correct, but you see everything in reverse order, so you see the last day first, and the first day last. Get it? Anyhow, it seemed that there were plenty of raccoons out on the streets. Good for “Team Roadkill” , a bike team who likes to prop up roadkill with beer cans, beads, lip stick for the enjoyment of the other riders on the route. This looks like a young raccoon who obviously had a fake ID if you can notice it has an “Over 21” wrist band and a Ragbrai rider bracelet!

We in Keokuk

I always fear the last town because I operate the sag wagon for our team on the last day and I never know what the traffic will be like leaving town. Turns out, Keokuk had a good exit road out of town. I had plenty of time to entertain the riders coming in to town.

Underwater ‘Jo player

Charlotte Moorman. That’s who I thought of when I put my banjo next to the deep sea diver. Who’s Moorman? Someone wrote a book about her. See here to learn more. I actually knew Charlotte in the early ’70’s and played on stage with her at the University of Illinois in Urbana, Illinois. Those were weird times indeed!
