Bonedale

BONEDALE is the name of the annual bike to work week in the town on Carbondale, Colorado:

A Possible BONEDALE logo?

I thought that this logo would be sold on a T-shirt somewhere in town but I didn’t see one. Oh well, we might as well take in some music:

At Steve’s Guitars

Usually there is live music on Friday night at Steve’s Guitars of Carbondale. On this Wednesday there was a group of folksingers doing their thing; We just happened to be there at the right time.

And then near the old Carbondale jail:

Some goofy left-handed banjo player

At the Carbondale PAC3

On another evening, Junior Brown was in town to play his “Guit-steel” double necked guitar at the Performing Arts Center on third street (PAC3) .  The PAC3 is a great venue to experience live music in a casual setting. It’s why we made the trip to Carbondale in the first place. Our concert seats were comfy couches about 15 feet from the stage.

Sharing the couches with us:

Two Carbondale celebrities Shawnna and Debbie.  Just like us, fans of Junior Brown.

The Coke ovens Basalt

The town of Basalt is about 10 miles north of Carbondale. These ovens were built around 1880 and were used for smelting coke for about 5 years until someone discovered coal near Aspen.

Avalanche  ranch

We’ve been to the hot springs pool in Glenwood Springs before, but there are at least two hot springs locations near Carbondale that offer a more natural setting.

BONEDALE: Carbondale without cars! Get it?

Road Trip: SD, part one

In Vermillion, South Dakota there is this “Shrine to Music” that has many odd examples on display:

Hurdy Gurdy

Stove Pipe Cello

and a Barrel Cello

Made by Palmer N. Roe of Canton, South Dakota in 1955.

Auction Day

Oh boy, I got to take some pictures of

An Indian Spice selection in a tin

An original poster from the 2012 election

Signed by Terry McNerney

Terry did the mural on the outside of Rockin’ Robins.

Some earrings

Lots of other stuff too.

Happy birthday to Mindy!

The octagon is finished:

It’s now Mindy’s new window

The winter basement project is now complete. There is another stained glass project in the works, but it’s not an octagon so I don’t had to mess with any special angles other than 90 degrees.

Here’s the glass mounted in Mindy’s window:

Fat Tuesday #5

Hey!–This blog is 5 years old today! How is that possible?

Our first post was February 12, 2008; It was VERY basic, see the link HERE to see what it looked like. At that time we didn’t know where we would end up but we knew we were going on a road trip to search for a place to live so that’s how ROADSIDE MYSTERIES was born.

In that first year we searched for the best place to live; We sold our house in Arlington heights and bought a house in Fort Collins; The Red Herring had a reunion; We attended many events like Tour de Fat and the Symphony for 1000 drums. It was all good!

By February 12, 2009 we were really getting to know the area and meet all sorts of great friends. There were science fairs and hospitals to visit, washing machine museums, trolley rides, and lots of music everywhere. Became part of a Samba band. Oh, we went to Denver for the first time too.

On our second birthday we changed our blog format and switched to something called WordPress. More stuff, like a cruise vacation and more in-depth music locations. More coverage of RAGBRAI, or not and ventures outside of Larimer County by bike and/or bus happened.

Our Third Year we checked out southern parts of Colorado, and our first Frozen Dead Guy Day. I drummed for 3 days with Arthur Hull; Traded my car for a bicycle at the Tour de Fat;

… And by Year Number Four we slimmed down a bunch. This was the year of the iPad and because of this device, some methods for getting pictures to the blog have influenced how this blog looks… and typing on the iPad is not that easy– but I practice often. By year four I became more involved with the start-up of the new museum, more involved with the entomology department at CSU, and it seems that I have attend a lot of parties featuring belly dancers??

And of course there was a

Fat Tuesday Party:

Food and Floats

Red beans and rice, Jambalaya and miniature Mardi  Gras float building

Winter Work

Not many bike rides in the snow. Why not another stained glass project:

Water color painted copy of an octagon window

A new glass project (The last one was here,  in April of 2009) assuming the old parts on hand still work. Lets see if I can finish this by the start of classes at CSU (January 21st).

First Night Last Night

As part of FoCo’s First Night, we started it off with a showing of “Dynamic Earth” at the FCMOD’s Otterbox Digital Dome Theater.  Then it was Pueblo Viejo for a few drinks and appetizers. Next some of the venues such as:

The Empty Pockets Celtic Trio?

Jerry the Janitor’s Science Tricks?

A Moment with Devil Dan?

…and finally the World Famous “Popovich Comedy Pet Theater” as seen on Leno, Letterman, America’s Got Talent, etc.

Halloween Finally Over?

Well, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It’s time to put away the spooky decorations and costumes and get ready for Winter.

Not too hard to do something at a Western themed party. This is Northern Colorado we’re talking about.

Our last days at the “Western Roundup” as we graduate from the Fort Collins Newcomers Club. You get kicked out after 4 years and our time has come. We must be native Coloradoans  now!!

How about dressed as a pair of bed bugs?

We made these costumes when we attended this year’s Holler!ween event. We also made a guest appearance as bed bugs at Laughing Buck Farm’s Spooky Farm Fest.

Or a Yeti playing some kind of musical bell contraption?

The old Yeti suit came out again for Bloco Em Foco’s Halloween Samba Special on Oak Street Plaza in Fort Collins.

Phantom of the Grand ‘Ol Opry?

Greeting trick-or-treaters at the door because Duncan Madog (note his satanic eyes peering behind the front door) does not like the sound of the doorbell.

How about Eddie with some characters at the Rocky Horror Show musical?

For Open Stage’s 40th year they brought back the stage production of Rocky Horror Show.

Red Rocks

Visiting Red Rocks:

As you can’t see, I’m playing a banjo on stage to an adoring crowd of maybe 10 or 12 people.

Oh, and here’s a panorama of the place.
