Friday, September 21st, 2018

I started making this tube percussion machine for the Music District show next week. Here are some pictures w/o any more text:

Watch for posts about this next week.

FOCO COMICCON!

And the Creator Hub was there!

Jim posing with Arachnia, the spider lady!

When do we ever have time to build stuff? Seems we go events all the time; At least that’s what it feels like! Here Jim is dresses as the elder “Mandrake the Magician” from the very old comic book series.

NEW FEST, WEST 2018

Saturday, August 11th, 2018

It’s that time again for the New West Fest!

The Creator Hub was there again

We were showing off a number of DIY projects including fused glass artwork and some Star Wars inspired laser cut models.

Gravity drawing thingie

Don’t know what to call this, but it used a pull chain to drag a pen along a board mounted vertically. It drew pictures on the paper and it kept people coming to watch it draw stuff.

Dr. Grandin and the Creator Hub thank you!

Saturday, June 23rd, 2018

Hey, it’s Temple Grandin!

Dr. Grandin loves the maker movement!

Temple Grandin was in this weekend to sign copies of her new book “Calling All Minds: How to Think and Create Like an Inventor”. And so was the Fort Collins Creator Hub!

Coming to a theater near U

Oh Boy, this is going to be GREAT!

Stop-motion technician making intricate changes to the clay model

The premier of “The Making of a Giant Stepp” won’t be until the FoCo Fringe Festival sometime end of July, but just to warn you we have decided to include a stop-motion scene to the “48 Hour Movie Festival” simply because the organizers said they have yet to see stop-motion in any of the entries to date.

Ames

Wednesday, May 16th, 2018

Today we used the vinyl cutter as a plotter (just put an ink pen in the cutter holder and there you have it) to draw an Ames Trapezoid:

It’s an illusion

And it’s for the book fair featuring Temple Grandin on June 23. From some of her own projects when she was growing up.

Violin Table, 1

Monday, May 14th, 2018

It’s a violin shaped planter table:

Top and bottom cut on a band saw (sure, could have used the laser cutter but…)

Clamped together. Some varnish and some legs and it will be done

This is an item I’m making for our book fair featuring Temple Grandin on June 23.

RICE MUSIC TIME AGAIN!

Wednesday, April 4th, 2018

More musical stuff at this year’s Rice Elementary Science Night!

Introducing the Carrot-Turnip Piano

Constructed from an Arduino Micro, voltage divider circuit, a very old laptop and a few vegetables this ‘instrument’ could make all kinds of musical sounds as well as various embarrassing noises, which of course the kids loved.

Home built instrument trio

From left to right we have a cuĂca, a Rebab and a cigar box guitar.

Homemade straw flute table

I did this last year, it seems to be popular so here it is again.

Big Bass Banjo in the corner

The banjo is so big and weird, why not include it with the rest of the music makers!

Who out there can play a theremin?

Many have tried. Here is my old model Termin-Vox with the sculls mounted on top why not? Also, there is an old TV on the right that operates like a poor man’s oscilloscope.

Something about physics

This was something I cooked up at the last minute. It’s a spinning Helmholtz Resonator experiment and it actually WORKS!

The Hub Abides

Friday, March 2nd, 2018

The Hub has an expansion plan:

Tentative plan

Looks like the current pallet racks might move 3 feet South (bottom left section) but with an expander metal and wood working area. The top right section is for storage and co-creator spots and the lower right will have a clean area for classes, laser cutting and 3D printing.

Floor area looking toward the air compressor

Floor area looking toward the office and bathroom

So Zach had mostly moved out and next week we should be cleaning and painting the walls. Look for the updates when we have it finished!

10 YEARS WE ARE

Monday, February 12th, 2018

The Blog is 10 Years old today!

Now, let’s make some magic wands:

Using a small lathe, the shapes get formed, each one a bit different than the last.

Insert small wires in the ends so they can hang freeley

Now hang them in a finishing box and let them dry

Get the wands ready. Remove the wire hangers and deliver them to the Dragon’s Ball
