Bear Lake in Winter

Or is it Brrrrrr! Lake:

Bear Lake

Compare with our last time we visited!  The wind chill was -17 degrees and some parts of the trail had about 12 feet of snow!  Lucky for us we rented some snowshoes from the local sporting goods store.

A RMNP guide tells us what to expect

Heck, this is many times safer than snowboarding; All you really have to do is know how to walk!  The snowshoes keep your feet from sinking into the deep snow while the poles can be used to prod the person ahead of you if they begin to slow down.

On the way back

Most of the group took the quick way down which included the ‘Sitzmark’ method of fall-line travel.  The best recommendation for this kind of trip is to have on-hand some fresh chemical hand/foot warmers.  The ones that oxidize iron appear to be the best; They produce an exothermic reaction on exposure to air: 4Fe + 3O2 –> 2Fe2O3.
