No Irish Need Apply

Monday, February 28th, 2011

This happens at Mulligan’s every Wednesday:

Fiddle, Mandola and Flute

Yet another flute

Concertina

Irish Harp

Boudran

Maybe a Mandocello?

As St. Patrick’s day approaches, it make sense to steak out some of the more traditional musicians in town and make sure we have a good location to take in the celebrations and the whisky.

Iowa Blackie Found Dead at 62 !

Friday, February 25th, 2011

Another crazy friend takes his last train ride…

Mr. Rick Gage

This is a picture of the hobo “Iowa Blackie” that I found on the internet (Google Image ‘Iowa Blackie’) . I think at the time he was on his way to the hobo convention in Britt, Iowa. His banjo case has been Photoshopped with the label “2003 IOWA Blackie” . Having his name in big letters just wasn’t his style.

Here I am with Iowa Blackie in Le Claire, Iowa during RAGBRAI

Here’s the Register’s comment on his death. I would always seem to catch him someplace on the Ragbrai ride. If I didn’t see him first, he would see me and then there would be an exchange of banjo jokes like you wouldn’t believe.  He was a “hobo” of sorts and was voted ‘King of the Hoboes’ at one time.  But how many hoboes have their own website? Check the site out before it’s gone: He’s got a refrigerator magnet on sale for $2!

The dude was a poet, too! Here’s a sample of his work “The Diarrhea Poem”

You ever had a day like that

When nothing seemed to come out right

Except when on the potty sat

So comfy with relief in sight

This time however you must run

For there is such an urgency

Of nature merely having fun

Disrupting your complacency

You make it in the nick of time

So thankful you were able to

And with a feeling most sublime

You let go with a mighty poo

Here’s to you, Mr. Gage. You will be missed.

The Linden Street project

Wednesday, February 23rd, 2011

Next to No Colo Feeders:

On the corner of Linden and Willow Streets

As this is right on the border of the original 1864 “Fort Collins” parade ground I will be on the lookout for certain ‘treasures’ of historical value that may be unearthed on this spot.

・ 必要な吐出量を確保しながらエンジン回転を低く抑える新エンジン・ポンプマッチング制御を採用。燃費効率の良いところでエンジン回転とポンプの吐出量をマッチングさせることで更なる燃費低減を図っています。 (From the product listing for the Komatsu PC 226 excavator)

It should take a month before it’s back to normal

I will be sure to report any findings on this impromptu archaeological dig. Who knows what I might find?

Colorado Castles

Sunday, February 20th, 2011

At location N 40° 05.600 W 105° 12.634

A Castle near Niwot, Colorado

After having checked out the site  Waymarking.com for castle buildings in Colorado I found  one listed in Westminster, Colorado that has an interesting history. I thought that I might check Westminster Castle for myself sometime, but before that happened I found the building pictured above. The castle is on a private estate located west of Niwot, Colorado. It’s not listed in Waymarking (yet!) and I’m going to ask around to find out something about it. Stay tuned.

Jazz @ Art Lab

Saturday, February 19th, 2011

Let’s hear this band:

The Wise Acres

Remember the Art Lab?  It’s the place where Bloco em FoCo made so much music the guy next door called the cops! This band has gone on for  ten years and so far no complaints from the neighbors. They must be pretty good!

Whose House Indeed

Monday, February 14th, 2011

Hey, it’s “Slapshot” the official mascot of the Colorado Eagles:

Here Mr. Slapshot is asking the question “Whose House?” to which we are to reply by screaming “Our House!!!” , implying that what happens here is completely under OUR control and that whoever is not from “Our House” is going to get their asses whipped.  Today it was the Missouri Mavericks.

Some “Eagle Chicks”

Representing behind the safety glass the 2010-11 Pioneer Press Colorado Eagles Chicks and all the rights and responsibilities that go with that title whatever that means. Pioneer Press has been Northern Colorado’s premier quality printing service since 1976. Their clients include Burns Marketing (Look it their fancy web page!)

Oh, there was some kind of fighting/skating contest with sticks.

RC helium balloons

We scored four tickets to the game and couldn’t wait for the periods where the would-be zeppelins “Valpak” and “Schrader’s Country Gesellschaft” would float over our heads to possibly bombard us with $20 coupons for Fort Fun. It seems a bit hard to believe but Fort Fun is Northern Colorado’s premier family entertainment center.

There are no tie scores in this game

so it would appear that “Our Colorado Eeeeagles!” made the first and wining goal in the first 50 seconds of the sudden death play-off.

Three Years – Oh My!

Since the first posting:

This blog is 3 years old today!

Life is a journey: Make sure you get a window seat.

XLV

Sunday, February 6th, 2011

It could be a Super Bowl Party:

Bunch a’ people watching a TV

Sort of like the 3-DEEP Super Bowl two years ago, but mostly everyone was there to watch the commercials and the Puppy Bowl presented by Animal Planet.

Something on the TV was interesting

Of course Mr. Duncan Madog was interested in Tom’s plate of food. The menu included pizza, stromboli, bean casserole, coleslaw, corn dogs and local beer from New Belgium and Equinox breweries.

And naturally after the game there were robot dinosaur races

We hear that Green Bay won the game, but we were too busy setting up the dino races. The grand prize was two tickets to a Colorado Avalanche hockey game.

A Hexbot and Roboraptor

Congratulations to Val and Mindy: They are going to a hockey game.

Old School

Tuesday, February 1st, 2011

Moved to Fort Collins’ Discovery Museum:

The Upper Boxelder School

Note that the school was moved from its original location at the Maxwell Ranch. (Remember, we met the Maxwell  grandson here).

One Room School

Fairly well preserved, this schoolhouse was in use until 1951. After the Maxwell Ranch was loaned to CSU, a group known as the Colorado Questers moved it into town.

What the teacher saw

There are ‘living history’ events held here in the summer so it would seem that it is still a school In-Use.
