The monastery sits on the original church grounds where Vasco da Gama spent the night in prayer before departing on his expedition to the Orient in 1497. Four years later construction of the monastery was started; completed about 100 years later, it was used by monks whose role it was to pray for the King’s eternal soul and to provide spiritual assistance to navigators and sailors who departed from the port of Restelo to discover lands around the world.
