Fun @ The Farm

Sunday, August 21st, 2011

at the Downs On The Farm in Berthoud:

Kids on drums

This little boy was fascinated with the Surdo drums.  He was here attending a BBQ party given by “Downs on the Farm“, a 501c3 non-profit focused on doing both animal rescue as well as offering animal therapy for kids with special needs.

Kids find needles in a stack of Hay? Hey?

Kids toss eggs at each other?

Kids and adults beat Ace Hardware pails with sticks

Kids eating pies quickly

Kids shooting arrows at targets. Does that say “Alcatraz Penitentiary” on that kid’s shirt?

Adults holding favorite pet chicken.

Lots other fun stuff too, like a petting zoo, horseback rides and sack races.

and Fort Collins premier samba band, Bloco Em Foco.

The Road to Joplin

Saturday, June 4th, 2011

Remember back in 2008 when we reported on Winsor’s tornado damage? That was a EF3 tornado on May 22, 2008. Three years later:

This was an EF5 in Joplin MO.

On May 22, 2011 a deadly tornado ripped though the town of Joplin, Missouri. The above picture was taken by my nephew Alan who currently resides in Joplin.

His Bedroom

Luckily Alan, his wife and their two dogs somehow survived the onslaught but as many as 134 people died. It is estimated that the tornado caused at least $3 Billion in damage. If you want to help those in need, please check out RebuildJoplin.org. The web site lists many local organizations taking donations and they could use your help!

The people of Fort Collins are helping.

Here in Oak Street plaza, Fort Collins’ premier samba band “Bloco Em Foco” performed a benefit concert for Joplin on June 3rd.

The First Friday Collection

On the first Friday of each month Bloco Em Foco sets out a bucket and collects money for worthy causes.

This Friday it was Team Rubicon for the Joplin relief effort.

APAC Fest in Fort Collins

Wednesday, May 18th, 2011

It’s the Asian/Pacific American Cultural Festival:

舞狮 Lion Dance

Where do they store these great costumes?

Taiko Drums

…and these taiko drums! They take up mucho space and they are heavy!

They also had an Hawaiian Luau which we didn’t attend because we’re upset that we aren’t going to Hawaii in October… at least we think we’re not going. Stay tuned!

Samba School

Wednesday, May 11th, 2011

At Fossil Ridge High School:

Featuring FRHS Jazz Ensemble

with Surdos and Agogo ??

And special Guest Artist Marcus Santos !

But in the playground it’s Fort Collins’ Premier Samba Band “Bloco Em Foco” !

Bloco Em Foco with Marcus Santos taking a picture break before getting back to another night of learning new Samba moves. Marcus has just started a new project called Grooversity that will include Bloco Em Foco as one of the partners if we are (gulp!) good enough! No, just kidding! You may have seen Marcus on this blog before:  We first met him on April 24, 2009 and learned our first Brazilian rhythms at the Beat Farm on April 28, 2009. We had more instruction outdoors on July 5, 2009 and then even more on this ‘remote’ island paradise on July 11, 2009. We had a gig in Wyoming with Marcus on  April 9, 2010 and there were other times in September 2010 that I had to miss due to this Mediterranean Cruise. Marcus will be back next September so I hope we’ll have our act together by then!

Drum Circle Candids

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

at some recent drum circles:

Justin on the Didgi

Meghan on the Ashiko

Jimi on Congas with cartwheels in foreground

Jimi on Banjo with more cartwheels in foreground

There were others in the past, like the Catalyst and the 1K drum event. It’s great that there is an active drumming community in town and more circles seem to be springing up. Check out Full Throttle Coffee on Mason on the 1st and 3rd Wednesdays of the month and of course we can’t forget the Foothills Drum Circle!

Dancing with Hope and Fear

Materialism and Meditation

& the ego’s project to attain enlightenment

A three day retreat at the Shambhala Mountain Center near Red Feather Lakes, Colorado.

The Great Stupa of Dharmakaya Which Liberates Upon Seeing

The Sacred Studies Hall

With Rhythmical Alchemy inside!

The Elf was with us

and we found peace.

Apparently every year there is what seems to be a ‘Drumming Event of the Year’ and this was it for 2011. And what a venue! The mountain center is a pristine six hundred-acre meditation retreat center that must be experienced. That’s why whenever we have guests staying more than a weekend we take them to see this place.

We had a bit of confusion at first because there was another group called “Dancing with Hope and Fear” at the mountain center on the same weekend and we naturally asked them to join us in drumming and dancing. They politely refused; It was a meditation class, not a dance class!

Thank you Shambhala Mountain Center for allowing us to drum well past curfew; I think some of the Shambhala staff were happy to have us!

Night of the Impalas

Sunday, October 10th, 2010

Like other places, different animal:

The horn section

painted bell with Impala

According to Newsweek, Poudre High School is the best High School in Fort Collins*.

There still is a music department!

and Bloco was there!

Yet again, the internationally famous mobile percussion ensemble of Fort Collins, the one and only ‘Bloco em Foco’ made a guest appearance at the PHS international fair! Eeiee!

*Much higher on the list was Niwot High School in Niwot, Colorado (pop. < 5000). While biking from Boulder to Longmont, I passed by Niwot and I really wanted to check the place out, but it was getting late. I found out later that the name ‘Niwot’ means “left-handed” and that they actually have a “Left Hander’s Appreciation day”. OK, next year I’M THERE!

drum circle evening

The cool evenings make this work quite well

Drum evolution part 1

On College avenue

Yet Another Drum Group

There are people out on the street who play drums. In town, there are lots of drummers out there.   Some play out in the open for money. Who ARE these guys. No, seriously, WHO are they? I think they are from Windsor, maybe a high school marching band but I can’t seem to identify the name on their t-shirts.
