The Wild Life

Monday, June 24th, 2013

Just take Hwy 52 East from I25 then turn right 4 miles after Hudson exit 31 onto road 53 then go 3 miles:

It’s near the town of Keensburg, CO

Called The Wild Animal Sanctuary, it is “America’s Premier Sanctuary For Large Carnivores”

The Mile Into the Wild Walkway

Completed in 2011, the walkway allows visitors to view the animals from above so that the animals below do not get the feeling of being watched at eye level like in a zoo.

African Lions

The sanctuary was originally located in the town of Lyons, Colorado but was moved to a larger 720 acre facility in 1989. There are about 300 animals currently living here.

We were visiting during mid-day when it was quite hot– around 93 degrees. Most of the animals were inactive except for the black bears. If we go back again, we will try to go early morning or late evenings.

Animals you might see at the sanctuary include : African Lions, Black Bears, Bobcats, Camel, Coati Mundi, Coyote, Emu, Foxes, Grizzly Bears, Leopards, Lynx, Mountain Lions, Raccoon, Tigers and Wolves.

A quick look at the Taste of Fort Collins:

Bubbles, tight ropes, bungees, music, and food

Although we are never quite sure about the food in FoCoLand, the music is always good. Our ‘local’ band SHEL was there on Sunday along with Petals of Spain, Bop Skizzum, and AWOLNATION.

Kendang ketipung aficionado

First check out the kendang in this panorama view at the Shrine to music:

Now look at the kendang player in this picture:

A Javanese gamelan in Fort Collins

After the visit to the Music Museum in SD (see Road Trip, Part One) I came across a group playing the gamelan and I mentioned that I JUST RETURNED FROM THE MUSIC MUSEUM IN S.D., AND DID YOU NOTICE THE BIG GAMELAN IN THE ROOM? Well, OK then. That must mean that I am some sort of a gamelan aficionado so why not sit in at a Streetmosphere gig in town? Ain’t Fort Collins a kick?

Jeanne’s Ride is a Kick

Wednesday, June 5th, 2013

This year Jeanne has a new attachment on her Giant hybrid bike:

The Giant with a cart in the back

is called a “Ride Kick”.  It’s a trailer that has an electric motor and battery to make the so-called hybrid bike into an electric hybrid bike.

We’ve tested this device before at some of the FoCo ride to work stations and decided this would make for some fun times this summer in the foothills of Northern Colorado. The little motorized cart simply pushes the bike at a top speed of 19 miles per hour.

Inside the cart

we have a battery pack with two 12 volt batteries connected in series, a bike lock, a battery charger and a motor control unit– and there’s room for some library books or perhaps a gym bag. Check out RideKick to learn more.

No Malt: I mean it!

Really, ANY malt?

I think CLRS means Cultural, Leasure, Recreational Something-or-other

I couldn’t find a list of orders from this “CLRS”, but it is really more defined as part of the City of Fort Collins Code 1972, § 84-2(A); Ord. No. 75, 1995, 6-20-95; Ord. No. 110, 2004, 7-20-04 Sec. 17-141 under the heading “Offenses Against Decency to wit: Carrying or drinking liquor or fermented malt beverages in certain places.
