@Home on the GRANGE

Thursday, November 29th, 2012

There is this brick building on West Mulburry Street. It looks abandoned. It’s an historic building in Fort Collins:

The Grange Hall

Granges were originally estates belonging to English feudal lords but in the U.S. a grange was a meeting place for farmers and their families.

The “Empire” Grange

Like the Left Hand Grange we visited in Niwot, the early granges helped establish land grant colleges and promoted electric/telephone services into rural areas. Organized in 1904, the grange hall was completed in 1912 built from bricks left over from the construction of the local sugar factory. Lee Maxwell‘sĀ  grandfather Robert Maxwell donated the land.

And in the basement of the Empire Grange:

Central Heating

Provided by this Detroit Stove Works Jewel Gravity Hot Air Furnace. The Detroit works made furnaces like this from 1880 to around 1920. It looks to have been converted to an oil burning furnace in the 1950’s. Behind the furnace is a (more) modern natural gas forced air furnace that heats the building today.

Also in the basement

Some dancers getting ready for a dance upstairs.

A light saber dance

Apparently on some evenings there is folk dancing at the Empire Grange. On this particular evening the female dancers wore Princess Leia Slave costumes.

The Disco Museum

OK, it’s really the Fort Collins Museum of Discovery

Panorama of the wind/water hands on exhibits plus something about sugar beet farming

The REAL NATIVE Coloradoans and the story of the invaders.

Native plants and animals

And music! Can’t forget music.

The above images were captured during the museum’s first week in operation. This 47,000 square foot museum successfully combines history and science that many museums around the country and perhaps even the world have never dreamed of doing… We are all watching to see what the future holds at this spot on the North side of town.

Halloween Finally Over?

Friday, November 16th, 2012

Well, Thanksgiving is right around the corner. It’s time to put away the spooky decorations and costumes and get ready for Winter.

Not too hard to do something at a Western themed party. This is Northern Colorado we’re talking about.

Our last days at the “Western Roundup” as we graduate from the Fort Collins Newcomers Club. You get kicked out after 4 years and our time has come. We must be native ColoradoansĀ  now!!

How about dressed as a pair of bed bugs?

We made these costumes when we attended this year’s Holler!ween event. We also made a guest appearance as bed bugs at Laughing Buck Farm‘s Spooky Farm Fest.

Or a Yeti playing some kind of musical bell contraption?

The old Yeti suit came out again for Bloco Em Foco‘s Halloween Samba Special on Oak Street Plaza in Fort Collins.

Phantom of the Grand ‘Ol Opry?

Greeting trick-or-treaters at the door because Duncan Madog (note his satanic eyes peering behind the front door) does not like the sound of the doorbell.

How about Eddie with some characters at the Rocky Horror Show musical?

For Open Stage’s 40th year they brought back the stage production of Rocky Horror Show.

Red Rocks

Visiting Red Rocks:

As you can’t see, I’m playing a banjo on stage to an adoring crowd of maybe 10 or 12 people.

Oh, and here’s a panorama of the place.
