IOWA, not again ?

Monday, July 30th, 2018

On the road again, this time starting in Onawa, Iowa:

Looks like we have here Lois, Barb, Ken, Sue and Jim getting ready for the first day of the ride

Onawa, Iowa is where the Darrow Pipe Organ company is located. I stopped by their shop located at 421 Pearl Street in Onawa just by chance as it was just a block away from the Ragbrai Expo, a good thing too, because there was not much new at the expo this year except for the Tide booth where I won a stainless steel coffee mug.

Biggest tractor award

Goes to this Case Quadratrack Mega-tractor parked out near some main street in Iowa someplace.

A sign of our age

No, we didn’t stay here, but this was the first Ragbrai we did where there was NO CAMPING! Oh, one night we stayed in a rustic cabin in a state park that had a bed and was air conditioned, but the bathroom/shower facility was located in another building. Other than that, it was Quality Inns and EconoLodge for us.

Weld two school buses together, what ya get?

The Bus Maximus of course. Since we didn’t make the campgrounds at any overnight, I didn’t get a chance to meet up with some of my favorite Ragbrai teams and their buses but we saw this one in the parking lot at one of the meet-up towns. (I did get to meet Lee Dog of the Tall Dogs again this year for a short time).

Thomas Rest Haven in Coon Rapids

This place sold Gyros for lunch and the residents were having a great time using water guns to shoot at the passing cyclists. I had heard that they were pretty accurate marksmen.

With Iowa State mascot, Cy the Cardinal

The Iowa State ‘Cyclones’ were called the Cyclones since 1895 but it was too hard to dress some volunteer to look like a a system of winds rotating inward to an area of low atmospheric pressure so years later the university chose a bird for their mascot.

The ABC computer

I made a pilgrimage to the Durham Center to see the first electronic digital computer ever built, but of course the exhibit was on loan to a computer museum in California. There were a few vacuum tubes and a memory cylinder on display so it wasn’t a total loss.

Jacquie Phelan and the Ragbrai Banjo

Jacquie, also known as “Alice B. Toeclips” is a famous cyclocross racer and founder of the WOMBATS. From an interviw: She has been called “the outlaw queen of mountain biking.” Sometimes, she plays the banjo.

Six Miles outside of Melborne, IA

In this picture, upper left is an Iowa State Patrol vehicle with a large audio speaker on the roof.  On the right, THOUSANDS of cyclists safely crossing a highway.  Bottom center is an official Iowa State Patrol wireless body microphone connected to a left-handed banjo.

Wilton, Iowa

In a caboose playing banjo for an hour. Another Ragbrai complete. No rain, no heat, no humidity. Best Ragbrai ever?

Today Loveland, Tomorrow Berthoud!

I think this has been in the works for 9 years?

A bike path between FoCo and Loveland!

And it only cost 1.2 million dollars! It’s really not too long a trail, but it does have a nice crossing light

It will get you to the Boyd Lake trail and from there to the center of Loveland.

Here are some pictures taken by Richard Harrington at this year’s Tour de Fat. Bloco em Foco hung around the tennis courts near the trolley depot to play for the riders. Some of the bike riders stopped a moment to dance or jam with us:

At yet another bike o work day!

This time it’s Duncan who looked at the camera

Whenever I remember that the bike to work day is coming I will actually get up early with the dog and the dog cart. I think the first time I did the bike to work breakfast was in 2009; at least that’s where I found this blog entry. Back then I tried to hit every stati0n. Since I didn’t have Duncan Madog back then, it was easier to travel all around town and not have to stop to pee every 5 minutes. But Duncan is cute so it’s good to have him along for the ride.

TOUR de FAT 2015

They came

We played

They danced

And everyone had a great time (Oh, maybe there was one person who complained about the noise…) Bloco em Foco was there again this year and it was much fun.

Bike Tang

Sunday, September 6th, 2015

I have yet to try this out…

It’s the BUSTANG!

Looks like you could put a few bikes on the front of this bus and ride out to the Denver Bus Station from Fort Collins for only $10 ($7.50 for seniors). Maybe I’ll do this on a fine Fall day when I find some free time.

Yet Another Weekend?

Friday, July 31st, 2015

And on to Ye Olde Larkspur…

And the Colo Ren Faire

Where we saw our favorite group The Celtic Legacy perform at the Colorado Renaissance Festival. So, in the town of Larkspur with a population about 200, the Summer weekends bring thousands from the surrounding area for the chance to walk along on an irregular jagged hillside, eating various delicacies such as turkey drumsticks, Pork Tails and Sausage on a stick. Located 30 minutes South of Denver (more like an hour due to traffic) and  Voted Best Family Day Trip…Gazette Telegraph it’s the kind of thing we might go to every other year. The Gazette Telegraph was responsible for the NORAD Santa Claus Tracking program in Colorado Springs. See Link Here.

Dinner at Crave Burgers in Castle Rock, overnight near THE ROCK (Sorry , no pictures) and then lunch in City Park, Denver. It’s there we saw a Google employee (volunteer?) using the street view trekker backpack on a trail near us as we ate lunch. We will be looking for our picture on Google Maps in the next weeks to see if we made it in.

From City Park, it was on to Coors Field to see the Rockies hit SEVENTEEN RUNS IN ONE GAME! Great weekend it was.

Bike Parking

Thursday, March 12th, 2015

We’ve seen ’em in Copenhagen:

A covered bike rack

Not much rain around here, but why not take good care of your bike and store it under a roof just in case? …and a lot of NoCo’s have bikes that cost more than their cars so having that extra protection is worth it.

And Double-decker racks no less

I guess that works, but this area ain’t all that urban. Big cities have them to save space but I wonder if these were cheaper than building a larger enclosure? Note that the upper racks lift down for loading. There is a spring-loaded hook to keep the front wheel stable and rails for cable locks. I’ll check these out on rainy mornings to see how often they get used.
