Snowy Range for the last time (I Think)

Friday, March 29th, 2013

Gotta get in that last bit of Spring Skiing:

Looking out of the back of the lodge at Snowy Range

And here is the “Magic Carpet”

It’s a moving sidewalk for the bunny hill skiers. No rope tow, chair lift, weird stuff to confuse.

Oh boy, I got to take some pictures of

First Fire for 2013

Tuesday, March 19th, 2013

And it won’t be the last:

View from across Lake Lindenmyer

We actually were going to buy a house in the area of the Galena Fire back in 2008. Certainly not as big as the High Park Fire, but it’s just a reminder that we have to be very careful what we do here in the foothills. I believe this fire was started when a retired nuclear physicist was goofing around with his homemade electric fence.

Another Loveland

Friday, March 15th, 2013

The town of Loveland is only 7 miles from the south side of Fort Collins, but can you actually go skiing in Loveland?

It says here you can!

And for 75 years people have been coming to Loveland to ski. How do they do it? There is no ski resort in Loveland!  It shouldn’t take long to realize that the Loveland ski area ain’t in the town of Loveland; It’s located in Loveland Pass about an hour and a half by car. Both the town and the pass are named after William A.H. Loveland who ran the Colorado Central Railroad back in the day.

It’s much higher than the town of Loveland.

I don’t know, around 13,000 feet; something like that. I didn’t take lift #1 to get to this point, and it certainly was not a rope tow!

Tesla in Colorado

Monday, March 11th, 2013

We all know Nikola Tesla had a laboratory in Colorado Springs…

A Tesla Coil in Fort Collins

Now that line transformers are going underground, you may be able to get one of those old pole transformers if you are in the right place at the right time. In the pole transformer, the 120 line voltage is increased to 14,000 volts.  The Tesla secondary coil in this unit can produce 500,000 volts.

Happy birthday to Mindy!

Thursday, March 7th, 2013

The octagon is finished:

It’s now Mindy’s new window

The winter basement project is now complete. There is another stained glass project in the works, but it’s not an octagon so I don’t had to mess with any special angles other than 90 degrees.

Here’s the glass mounted in Mindy’s window:

The Snowy Range

Tuesday, March 5th, 2013

Go where the snow is:

Well the sign says there is 48 inches of old snow

…And by noon there was about 2 to 3 inches added on top at the Snowy Range Ski Area. It’s another ski weekend!

No lift lines here!

You live in Colorado to ski, but today we are not in Colorado. The Snowy Range is in the state of Wyoming and although the ski runs aren’t as long as they are at Copper, on the weekdays you can ski down some runs and not see any other skier. This place might have more people on the weekend but it’s nice to get to this little gem of a mountain that’s only an hour and a half from FOCO. Going North means you don’t have to drive on I-70, just take 287 to Laramie and then West on 130 to Centennial. Nice!

Marilyn and John

They were going and asked if wanted to come.  My left ankle was still sore from a sprain I managed to get while I was out in the back yard watering the trees (sigh!) but with the left ski boot tightened just enough to allow some blood circulation, I was OK to hit the slopes.

M.E. was there too!

There were a few snow boarders out but I bet there were more lift operators than skiers. Having been in Colorado for 4.5 years, it has finally dawned on me that I can and should go skiing once in a while. Now that others know that I can do this activity (if minimally at best) it looks like 2013 will be downhill for the rest of the season.

Toutman Underpass

Sunday, March 3rd, 2013

This just opened:

The Troutman Parkway Bike underpass ‘system’

There was concern from the city that clumsy people who cross the BNSF train track at the Mason/Toutman line might trip and fall and perhaps even get run over by one of the trains that pass through the town (12 a day? something like that). Why would they want to cross at this intersection anyway? Well there’s the Foothills Vacuum & Sewing Center, Big Lots, and the Country Buffet? Oh! And the Taverna Greek Grill is only a block east. Maybe that’s the attraction?

12 foot path leading to a 24 foot wide tunnel

Of course, the MAX-Troutman station will be on this spot in 2014 (where the Troutman sugar beet farm used to be 100 years ago), so people will be able to take the MAX downtown from here without crossing the tracks.

Kind of looks like a livestock facility designed by Temple Grandin

The incline isn’t that great to have this weird switch-back pathway; It’s hard to see from street level but as soon as I can get an areal view I’ll post it.

The street called Troutman Parkway is one of those goofy winding streets that make you crazy because on the west side of Mason it acts like a quaint residential street and on the east side it acts like a big city street and YOU CAN’T GET FROM ONE END TO THE OTHER! When we first moved here, we stayed away from Troutman Parkway.

Walking Dead use this tunnel?

Now it really is starting to make sense.
