Oh, and some royalty too!

Melanesian Mask Festival

and tribal helmets

Winter Bike 2 Work day!

Thursday, December 16th, 2010

I do this at least two times per year. I first reported it HERE and then over THERE. Looks like I did again. But I didn’t try to hit every booth. Here’s a few I did hit in the morning:

New Belgium Brewing

Actually it was better than last year I think. Maybe they read my complaint. YES, no more of those damn breakfast burritos.

They had eggs and sausage

Duncan Madog Approves!

This winter I had Madog in tow and he got to eat a sample of each breakfast. I think he really liked what New Belgium served, but he seems to like any kind of food anyway!

Breakfast Burritos?

Oh well, somebody had to have ’em. It was the Wright Life, in Old Town Fort Collins. It’s an “Alternative Sports Store”  that sells stuff like glowing Frisbees so you can play Frisbee golf at night.

Who sponsors this?

It’s good old Bike Fort Collins,  and FCGOV, of course

Lee’s is always a good bet

and here’s Recycled Cycles on South Mason

They had blueberry pancakes.

It was a good winter ride; At 7:00 am the temperature was about 37 and by 9:30 am it hit 42 degrees. Duncan really enjoyed the ride and he got to play with his friends in the dog park for about an hour after breakfast to work off some calories.

The Road to Niwot?

A Fire Department truck from Longmont?

And Sparky, the Fire Dog Mascot

Featuring Duncan Madog (a real dog!)

The road to Niwot is the Diagonal Highway from Longmont to Boulder. We stopped in at the little village of Niwot for the parade; We stayed to meet some really nice people and have lunch at Colterra. Will we be back? You betcha! Especially on Left Handers Appreciation Day.

More than one bass brass instrument here

Sunday, December 12th, 2010

First we had more bassoons than we could deal with; Now this:

Cecil Guitierrez

The mayor of Loveland directing not one, but….

A whole lot of Tubas & Euphoniums

Gathered together this weekend on Oak Street Plaza in beautiful downtown Fort Collins, Colorado, USA!

It’s a Merry Merry Tuba Christmas!

Or the 7th annual Christmas Tubathon, presented with permission from the Harvey Phillips Foundation which apparently administers events such as OCTUBAFEST, TUBAJAZZ, TUBASANTAS, and TUBACHRISTMAS around the world. Harvey Phillips, a legendary tuba player died on October 20 of this year.

Duncan Madog

and his friends were there in the plaza listening to Christmas tuba favorites. Here he is wearing his green CSU sweats and a cute little santa hat.

Museo de Avenir

Thursday, December 9th, 2010

Or the Avenir Museum of Design & Merchandising:

From the Mr. Blackwell Collection

Form-fitting floral brocade gown with contoured mandarin collar, three patch pockets with foldover flaps on each side.

Patriotic Red and Blue

polyester knit dress with banded collar and star-shaped brooch.

Floral weave gold lame gown

with large bow on right shoulder and streamer extending to hem.

Some more dummies wearing Mr. Blackwell Custom designs

Mr. Richard Blackwell (best known for his annual Worst-Dressed List) spent a week at CSU teaching and lecturing in 1997. The new Avenir museum opened in April 2009 with the world’s largest collection of Mr. Blackwell’s designs.

Poudre Storage

Sunday, December 5th, 2010

And this from the historical archives:

“Old school bus saved- A little muscle supplied by Lambda Chi Alpha fraternity brothers moved the old Cache La Poudre school bus onto a trailer for its ride to Livermore on Saturday. Rosalie Rohrbacker donated the horse drawn bus to the Larimer County Historic Trust Alliance. It will be stored at the site on the alliance’s proposed historic park until funds can be raised for restoration. ”

Bus # 1

I found the storage area where this bus is being kept.

I think it is in need of restoration

Lots of restoration!

And now, the choice of vehicles for drug runners:

The area also stores vehicles impounded in drug raids.

I suspect the neighbors with the big SUV down the street have a meth lab in their basement.

“The Denali line is the ultimate expression of masterful innovation, impressive power, and sophisticated comfort”

Oh the weather outside is frightful

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Well someplace, just not here… yet.

It’s the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration

and it’s located in Boulder, Colorado. It’s a scientific agency of the US Department of Commerce that focuses on conditions of the oceans and the atmosphere.

…what about time and space?

Apparently they are on top of that as well. They keep the official U.S. Time Atomic Clock in the same building.

An artist rendering of what NOAA is all about. See those 1’s and 0’s coming out the bottom of the Earth? That’s digital data!

Weather satellite

The first weather satellite was the Vanguard 2 launched on Feb. 17, 1959. It didn’t work very well, but it was FIRST!

Sun Spot observation room (note the toy Earth – Sun model on the desk)

The first sun spots were observed by Chinese astronomer Gan De about 364 BC.  Remember that Joy’s Law states that “No matter who you are, most of the smartest people work for someone else,” from Bill Joy, co-founder of Sun Microsystems;  no, wait, I mean the law that  states that active sunspot regions tend to be “tilted” with the leading spot closer to the equator than the following spots. That’s the one I mean. From the astronomer A.H. Joy. That guy.

One of these employees has been cursed with chronic anxiety about the weather?
