Happy Birthday George

Thursday, January 9th, 2014

It’s George’s Birthday today!

George

George was with us on the mediterranean cruise a while back; we sometimes forget what a great guy he is for putting up with us for what seemed like an eternity of that ship. Hope he gets to come along with us on our next trip. Have a great birthday my friend!

Tesla in Colorado

Monday, March 11th, 2013

We all know Nikola Tesla had a laboratory in Colorado Springs…

A Tesla Coil in Fort Collins

Now that line transformers are going underground, you may be able to get one of those old pole transformers if you are in the right place at the right time. In the pole transformer, the 120 line voltage is increased to 14,000 volts.  The Tesla secondary coil in this unit can produce 500,000 volts.

The Bus 2 Pingree

Wednesday, September 21st, 2011

It’s near where we went in 2008 on the Veteran’s Day Trek.

No hike today: We went via a CSU Bus

to the beautiful Pingree Park Conference area and learning center for CSU’s forestry students. We didn’t hike up to the B17 crash site this time; We just took a tour of the many buildings at the park and took in the fall colors.

A member of the Warnar College of Natural Resources

tells us how we could become involved in the many activities at the “mountain campus”, including music and painting workshops not to mention getting lost on the miles and miles of hiking trails.

Taxidermy in the museum

among other things. I haven’t posted a picture of a stuffed cat in a while, so here it is.

The Cold Storage

is one of the buildings on this site. George Pingree first came here to cut down trees for making railroad ties in 1868 then the Ramsey and Konig families homesteaded the area and built a number of log structures.

Kiddie cemetary

Some of the Konig kids didn’t make it through the harsh winters here. They were buried in the plot with lamb markers (now placed upon cinder blocks for easier viewing).

The Colors!

The park is a little over 9,000 feet in elevation so we were able to catch an early glimpse of what to expect down below in FoCo in the next week or so.

UCA Midterms

Tuesday, April 5th, 2011

Recently we were walking through the University Center for the Arts during midterms…

Student with bass fiddle, stool and bow case.

Just leaving the recital hall; I hope he did OK. We also caught a glimpse of Wes Kenney, the music director of the Fort Collins Symphony and CSU faculty member walking down this same hallway.

Dance class

The instructor called us in; She said that her students just LOVED an audience! They were in the middle of their midterm examinations.

back to school

Tuesday, August 17th, 2010

for Liberty Commons High School students:

The New High School

In reality the students are not going back to this school because it was recently constructed; they will be attending for the first time this Wednesday. It looks kind of plain right now, but with a little landscaping… hey, it’s brand new.  Maybe a sign perhaps?

Computer Lab Grand Opening

Man, getting ready for the first day is tough. I know, I had to do it twice when I was a teacher. I bet there will be some teachers burning the midnight oil tonight! Note: Teaching is hard work!

Bill and some bones

I asked Bill to show me around some of the rooms. While the computer room where Bill teaches appeared classroom ready, the science classroom was bare-boned (get it?). There were two Spec-20 spectrophotometers available on one of the lab benches so I can imagine that there could be some analytical activity happening in the near future.

Brush Fire Truck

The Poudre Fire Authority was on hand to 1) build a campfire and 2) put it out. Nobody was burned during the activity, so I guess it worked.

The Campfire

This was all part of a grand opening of sorts for the new high school. It would have been better if there was some kind of samba band present to provide entertainment.

Oops, there was!

Bloco em Foco was there watching the campfire from a safe distance.

Teaching Vets

Thursday, April 15th, 2010

At the James L. Voss Veterinary Teaching Hospital:

Dog Head MRI

The CSU Animal Clinic is just down the road a bit. I pass it often on the Mason Trail whenever I’m riding into Old Town. They just had their annual open house so I came over to take a peek!

Camel MRI

Doggie Xray

Dog?  Operation

Wow, somebody’s got a dog that looks like a freaking hyena! Hyenas are more related to the family Herpestidae (mongooses and meerkats) than the family of dogs (Canidae).

Animal dietary kitchen

Duncan Madog can’t just walk into the kitchen!

Student Activities Booths

There are so many vet hospitals in town! Now I know why!

Horse Bones

Dog Head

Horse Head

They had a number of activities at the open house including:

  • opportunity to try milking a goat
  • farm animal arts and crafts
  • trivia games
  • mock surgery for youngsters
  • a petting zoo
  • balloon animals
  • police dog demos

… and all kinds of clubs and associations on hand to answer your questions:

  • American Association of Bovine Practitioners
  • American Association of Feline Practitioners
  • American Animal Hospital Association
  • American Association of Small Ruminant Practitioners
  • Behavioral Club
  • Christian Veterinary Fellowship Club
  • Diagnostic Imaging Club
  • Lab Animal Research Club
  • Pain Management Club
  • Pathologics Club
  • Shelter Club
  • And my favorite, The Buckhorn Valley Kennel Club

(We’re going to take Duncan Madog to the BVKC remedial sheep-herding trials in August to see what he can do! Pembroke Corgis are supposed to be natural sheep herding dogs, don’t cha’ know?)
