RAGBRAI: Rock Valley

Sunday, July 20th, 2014

Day one of Ragbrai started in Rock Valley, but our Denver team ‘Fly Girl and Tag-alongs’ actually started in Sioux Center to avoid the crowds (possibly):

A family’s land provided the Tent City

All the similar looking tents on the left are provided by a Ragbrai charter service called ‘Pork Belly Ventures’. It looks quite tidy to have all those tents lined up in neat little rows, all looking the same. I’ve never used a charter service and I’m not sure if I would be able to find my tent especially at night (which is usually when I roll into town). The owners of the land called it McGillville.

The McGillville Family

Well, most of it.  Although we were spending the night in a hotel in Sioux Center, we rode down to Rock Valley to check out the bike expo.

Someone with pink hair

I think she was there to do some face painting or something like that mostly for the local children in the area as these parties tend to draw plenty of the non-cyclist crowd. The ones on the ride have to get up early the next morning and ride!

Ragbrai Bike Expo

We arrived fairly early and found out that helicopter rides were available near the ball field. So I tagged along with the ‘Fly Girls’ and shared a ride with them. This was some money making scheme for the ‘copter pilot and his friends. It was a quick in and out, no waiver required, just a fast 5 minutes in the air and then on to the next one. No incidents this time.

Tent city in Rock Valley

So maybe around 10,000 riders came into Rock Valley for the start of the great feast of the Ragbrai. They spent the night, got up around 5:30 the next morning, packed up and most of the hoard was gone by 10:30. The ride has begun!

Roof! Roof!

Friday, July 18th, 2014

From the last post on Hail Here, what could you expect:

Roofing companies swoop down on our neighborhood

Just a few from the homes north of us with signs from companies located in Denver, Littleton, Longmont, Loveland, Golden and one company from someplace in Wyoming.

Not the same in loveland

Sunday, July 13th, 2014

Back in 2010 we did a thing on Loveland Loves BBQ. It was huge with over 25 BBQ vendors and just as many other types of activities. This year was not so great. I know that there are a few BBQ places in Loveland, but they were not represented here. At least Nordy’s was at the one 4 years ago but not at this one. Famous Dave’s from Fort Collins was there, but none of the other five or six local joints showed up as in previous years.

On stage, the Bakersfield Band out of Longmont

OK, this is the standard kind of entertainment featured at Bob’s Country Bunker and its like, but what’s with the announcer acting all like “We be Loveland, We better than Fort Collins!” What kind of shit talk is that? Loveland have an inferiority complex much? Maybe if they had 25 vendors serving pork ribs instead of only three. That’s right, ONLY THREE PLACES TO GET RIBS! Maybe three other vendors serving pulled pork. Not the same! No way! It turns out they used to have a BBQ contest but the city decided it cost too much time and money. Too bad Loveland, you have some good BBQ joints in town, but you wouldn’t know it from this festival.

Yums!

At Yum Yum’s on the Second Saturday of the month:

Drumming with amplified banjo and violin

And belly dancers too. The Middle East meets CSU campus with weird fiddle and banjo dancing with Santori Dance group. Time to get your shimmy on!

At the ‘Mish’

Friday, July 11th, 2014

Just take US287/14 north to Ted’s Place, turn left on 14 and go 13.7 miles along the Poudre River:

Joan Baez was there tonight

The Mishawaka or just plain “Mish” is an outdoor music venue north of FoCo as opposed to Red Rocks which is south of FoCo. We have driven up the Poudre Canyon for years and never stopped at the Mish maybe because it looked really too small for a proper concert location and it didn’t seem to have much parking, and driving back at night on the dark winding roads seemed treacherous, and, gee, what kind of concerts do they actually have, and who goes there? On this day, Joan Baez called us and we did indeed check out the Mish for he first time! (We took the Mish shuttle bus there because, really, where could you park at this place????)

Joan’s Band

Consisting of Dirk Powell, Grace Stumberg and Gabriel Harris. Joan sang a few numbers that she sang at Woodstock 45 years ago. Was it really that long ago? And Dirk Powell is a great musician; a founding member of the Balfa Toujours and ex-husband to Dewey Balfa’s daughter Christine. I know the name because I once met Dewey Balfa in 1970 in the kitchen of a bluegrass band called the Bean Blossom Public Librarians. There’s probably a good story in there somewhere…

12 days until RAGBRAI

And what do I have to show for it?

OK, how about using Duncan Madog as (dead) weight for ride conditioning?

What makes this picture unique is that it is a WiFi Selfie. I needed to replace my camera (again!) and this time I bought a Canon ELPH340HS because it had high ISO for the price, I guess. Whatever, while it has a weird battery that I must deal with, it also can act as a WiFi node to connect to other devices like my iPad. This means that I can adjust the picture by viewing it on the iPad then activate the shutter via said iPad (not shown in the picture for obvious reasons). This could be useful for Ragbrai maybe? I don’t know, wait and see..

Went to Coors Field & the Rockies Won a game!

Saturday, July 5th, 2014

Please remember on a sunny day you must find a shaded area to watch the game:

Our view from the Lower Reserved Infield at Coor’s

But it is row 5 in section L335 which seemed like a great location for 1)viewing the ballpark 2)zipping out for restroom / food vendors and 3) Not having anyone right behind you,

The view near the Famous Dave’s Rib stand

The only bad thing about L335 is that it’s not near all the more interesting vendors but that’s OK because baseball is a slow game. Nice that the home team won 8 to 7 on this day.

July 4, 2014 FoCo Parade

Friday, July 4th, 2014

Haven’t seen one of these before…

WW1 ammo carrier Nash Quad

One of the early four wheel drive trucks, it also had four wheel steering.

A 10 wheel Jeep?

Don’t know about this one. Some sites say that there are only 2 such known vehicles like this one? Don’t know– should have asked someone there…

Birny car heads the parade

We all know this one, it’s the original Fort Collins Trolley from 1919. Happy 4th of July to you all!
